Auto Electrical Repair Work Process

Warning Signs

Signs of an Electrical Problem

Electrical faults often start small and get worse. Have the system tested if you notice:

  • Slow cranking, clicking or a no-start
  • A battery that keeps going dead
  • The battery or charging warning light is on
  • Dim or flickering headlights
  • Power windows, locks or mirrors that stop working
  • Blown fuses or a burning-plastic smell

A dead battery is not always the battery. A failing alternator or a hidden drain can kill a brand-new battery in days.

Prevention

When to Test Your Electrical System

A quick test can prevent a breakdown:

  • When your battery is three years old or more
  • Before summer heat and long road trips
  • After a jump start
  • When a warning light comes on
  • After any accident or water exposure

Electrical Repair Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it is my battery or my alternator?

If the car starts after a jump but dies again soon, or the battery light is on while driving, the alternator is a likely suspect. A quick test of both tells you for sure before you buy parts.

How much does electrical diagnosis cost?

It depends on the fault. A battery and charging test is quick; tracing a drain or a wiring fault takes longer because we follow the circuit until we find it. Every job starts with a free written estimate. We explain what's wrong and what it costs before any work begins. Call (279) 218-7797.

What is a parasitic drain?

It is something that keeps drawing power after the car is off, such as a stuck module, a light or an aftermarket accessory. It slowly drains the battery overnight. We measure the draw and find the circuit causing it.

Do you replace batteries?

Yes. We also check the charging system so the new battery is not killed by a bad alternator.

Can you fix headlights and bulbs?

Yes. One customer's 2018 Jeep Compass needed new headlight bulbs; we ordered them and replaced them without any issues.

Auto Electrical Repair in Rancho Cordova

What We Repair

Batteries, alternators and starters, parasitic drains, blown fuses and relays, wiring and connector damage, headlights and other lighting, power windows, locks and mirrors, sensors and warning lights. Electrical warnings, from sensors to window regulators, are a regular visit at our shop, including on European cars (see European car repair).

Testing Before Replacing

Electrical problems are where guesswork gets expensive. A new battery does not fix a bad alternator, and a new alternator does not fix a corroded ground. We test first, show you the result and quote the repair. Nothing is replaced without your OK.

Common Electrical Repairs We See

No-starts from a weak battery or worn starter, charging warnings from a failing alternator, batteries drained overnight by a module that never shuts off, corroded battery terminals and grounds, and lights or power windows that stop working because of a broken wire in a door hinge or a failed switch. Each one gets tested before anything is replaced.

Electrical Problems and the Check Engine Light

Many check engine lights on newer cars come from a sensor or wiring fault rather than a mechanical failure. Our check engine light diagnostics and electrical work go hand in hand. If your car will not start at all, we can arrange towing to our shop.
